Out on a limb

Tree surgeon Joe Gartland climbed a tall pine Wednesday morning in a failed effort to rescue Last One, a 5-year-old cat who has been stuck up the tree for 10 days without food (above). The tree lacks an easy route down for the cat because there are no branches on the tree's lowest 15 feet. Attempts by firefighters last week and Gartland this week have only served to frighten Last One into climbing further up the tree, where the branches are too thick and the trunk is too flimsy to accommodate Gartland. Last One is more than 85 feet off the ground now, Gartland estimates, and can be seen lying on the tree's highest branch. (The Daily Triplicate/Bryant Anderson III).
