Confessions of a Shakespeare Festival addict

Something magical and transporting occurs when one watches a quality theater production.

It can strike deep into your heart and senses and bring out a wide range of emotions — laughter, fear, anger, sadness and hope — all playing out on a darkened stage.

In this high-tech digital age entertainment can be found with just a click of a cell phone, I-Pod or television. But thankfully, the ancient art of theater endures and thrives.

A festival known around the world that brings an eclectic range of productions to audiences is only a two-and-a-half-hour car ride away from Crescent City.

Four Del Norte High School FFA students attended the 2008-2009 North Coast Region spring meeting and competitions recently in Ferndale. Three of these members had previously competed at the sectional competitions in McKinleyville.

Christian Alexandre and Vanessa Alexandre competed in the extemporaneous speech competition. Christian placed first and Vanessa placed fourth.

Meghan Webb competed in the prepared speech competition, placing fifth. Only first and second place moved on, making Christian eligible for the regional competition in Ferndale. There, Christian placed third in the extemporaneous speech competition and is now moving on to the state competition, where the top four finalists from the six California regions will compete.

Local child selected

A local resident, 7-year-old Carson Hogan, will be off to New York this July to attend the prestigious International Modeling and Talent Association Convention.

Carson will have the opportunity to showcase his talent for movie and TV producers and talent agents from the Los Angeles and New York entertainment industry.

Many of today’s hottest models and actors launched their careers at IMTA: Katie Holmes, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Eva Longoria, Elijah Wood, just to name a few.

Carson has been taking acting/modeling classes for over a year at Image and Modeling Development, Inc., located in Medford, Ore. Carson auditioned in December and was selected out of about 400 contestants. IMD will be taking about 20 kids, ranging in age from 4-25 years.

Good luck, Carson!

Curves food donation to RHS

Ron Phillips accepts a food donation from Christine Roberts, owner of Curves. Submitted Photo
When Christine Roberts, owner of Curves, contacted Rural Human Services’ Special Programs Manager, Ron Phillips, he was delighted to learn that Curves had been conducting a food drive last month in support of its local food bank.

Over 600 pounds of healthy, non-perishable food was collected, all through the generous donations of the 143 members of the ladies health club. This gift was loaded into the RHS Food Bank van and will be distributed in emergency food boxes for people in need in Del Norte County.

“This is not the first time Christine and all the fabulous ladies at Curves have given to our community,” Ron said. “Last Christmas, through RHS, they adopted an entire family in need, ensuring that they had a holiday meal, a Christmas tree and gifts for all the children.  This food drive is a perfect example of how they continue to do good work for Del Norte County.”

A great big thank you to the ladies of Curves!

Easter Seals and Safeway raise funds

Executives from Safeway, Easter Seals and Special Olympics launched the grocery retailer’s annual fundraising campaign for people with disabilities on April 1 by challenging employers to tap into what they call an “extraordinary resource” of people who are ready and willing to work.

Each April, Safeway and its Safeway stores here in Northern California raise funds to help children and adults with autism and other disabilities by asking shoppers to donate to Easter Seals, the largest non-profit provider of autism and disability services, and Special Olympics at checkout.
