Soroptimists awards luncheon

Several women were presented with awards by the local Soroptimists Club at a luncheon ceremony March 10 at the Lighthouse Inn. Air Force graduate

Air Force Airman Michael A. Thiessen has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Thiessen is the son of Annabell Thiessen of Crescent City, and a 2007 graduate of Del Norte High School.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

Homecoming queen

Amy Ramirez, a Del Norte High School senior and 2008 Homecoming Queen, is competing in America’s Homecoming Queen Pageant and has been selected as a finalist for California’s 29th annual Homecoming Queen Selection to be held March 21-22 at the Marriott Fullerton at California State University.

Amy participated in a three-year program at Del Norte High School, placing her in this year’s graduating class of 2009. She also attended College of the Redwoods, and plans to attend Humboldt State University this fall.

Amy is the daughter of Rocky and Rebecca Ramirez of Crescent City. Her sister, Rocksanne Ramirez, is the 2008 freshman princess.

Hospitality 101 class graduates

The new project along America’s Wild Rivers Coast recently completed its first class. The two-day, 16-hour course teaches customer service skills to business owners and employees.

Twelve local individuals completed the course and received a Customer Service Certification.  

Based on the American Hotel and Lodging Association’s Education Institute curriculum, the class covers all aspects of service, from the moment a customer steps foot into a business, until the moment that customer departs. Special emphasis on learning local knowledge of America’s Wild Rivers Coast makes this course unique to our area.
