Pro-sanctioned disc golf tourney comes to town

Disc golf enthusiasts and novices will have an opportunity to participate in the first-ever Professional Disc Golf Association tournament at Crescent City’s Beachfront Park on Saturday.

The PDGA presents a new C-tier tournament called Bangin’ at the Beach, organized by Wild Rivers Disc Golf Club president Kevin Mealue.

The tournament will use 18 of the course’s 24 holes with participants throwing two rounds. There will be an open division for anyone who wishes to participate, an advanced division and a novice division.

Additional divisions will be added as needed depending on participation. Possible divisions include a womens division, a masters division for players 40-49 and a grand masters division for 50-59 year olds.

According to a Triplicate article from last Saturday, Mealue had to pull the tournament together quickly. The disc golf club had originally planned to hold a tournament on Saturday in conjunction with the State of Jefferson Flip Out Week to help raise money for Gateway Education, according to Mealue.

After that event fell through, Kelly Muth of the Par Infinity Disc Golf Club in Humboldt encouraged Mealue to shift the
tournament to a PDGA event. She became the tournament director and helped get the event sanctioned by the PDGA.

Several local businesses and organizations are sponsoring the event, including the Crescent City Jaycees, Porcini’s and Home Depot.

“I have had nothing but overwhelming support from the community,” Mealue told the Triplicate last week. “I can’t wait to see how great this tournament will be and how we can all work together to make Del Norte a recreation destination.”

The cost to participate is $35 for the open division, $30 for advanced and $25 for the novice division. The cost is $10 more per division without a PDGA membership.

Registration is from 7:30-8 a.m. Saturday with players meeting at 8:30 a.m. and tee time at 9 a.m. For more information, visit the Wild Rivers Disc Golf Club website atwww.wildriversdiscgolf.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wildriversdiscgolfclub
