Santa's Workshop

Once again, Santa's Workshop is reaching out to Del Norte County to provide holiday gifts for children in need.

Santa's Workshop has provided toys and clothing for children in need for 5 years, and with an outpouring of support, it was able to provide gifts to 674 children.

As in years past, the Santa Workshop gift program works by displaying decorative tags on "Giving Trees" located in banks and businesses. The tags specify a child's gender, age, and gift wish.

Anyone wishing to participate may select a tag from a tree, purchase the gift and bring the tag with unwrapped gift to Santa's Workshop at Rural Human Services, 286 M Street, Crescent City, before noon on Dec. 18. Our wonderful volunteers will match the gifts to the proper family, and then wrap everything for distribution on Dec. 22.

Santa's Workshop has succeeded so far because of donations from local people, broad community support, and contributions from RHS. Volunteers are needed as well as monetary and gift donations. Supplies, such as tape, ribbon, and wrapping paper, are also welcome.

The volunteer workers are vital to the success of this program. It takes a lot of hands to wrap hundreds of gifts and prepare them for distribution, all in a short time frame. Working with youth groups from Scouts, Job's Daughters, 4-H, Crescent Elk, Bar-O-Boys and many other youth and adults from throughout the county, the gifts arrive on time.

Applications to qualify for the 2007 Santa gift program will be taken at:

Smith River: 9 a.m. to noon, Monday and Tuesday at Smith River Fire Station, 245 North Haight Avenue.

Cookies and hot chocolate will be served to participating applicants.

Klamath: 9 a.m. to noon, Monday and Tuesday, Klamath Community Center, 219 Salmon Avenue.

Rest of county: 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Thursdays from Oct. 25 to Nov. 20 at Santa's Workshop at Rural Human Services, 286 M St., Crescent City.

Families can apply at any location.

To qualify, the family must currently qualify for RHS' Food Bank commodities.

Parents must bring proof of total family income, birth certificate and social security card for each child or a current "Passport to Services" printout from Del Norte County Dept. of Social Services.
