Harold Del Ponte, past lieutenant governor of Kiwanis District 20, reads to a kindergarten class at Margaret Keating School in 1997. Submitted The Kiwanis Club of Crescent City is beginning its 18th year of its KIK project: Kiwanis in Kindergarten. Eighteen years ago, Gene Edinger learned of the Fortuna Club’s “Books for Kindergarten” program. This was a perfect project for the Crescent City Kiwanis Club, following Kiwanis International’s motto, “Serving the Children of the World.” Gene set up the KIK program with the teachers and a strong support group.
The club purchases books to read each month to every kindergarten class in Del Norte County, both private and public.
These books are donated to the classroom library. Last year, readers read four hardcover books to each of the 16 kindergarten classes. Four times last year, each of the 360 students received a book with their name in it to take home and keep.
Margaret McLaughlin, a Kiwanis member, kept her membership in the
local club when she moved away. When Margaret passed away, she willed
$1,000 to KIK. Two of Margaret’s sisters flew here from Ohio to present
the check at a regular meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Crescent City.
The Kiwanis Club of Crescent City meets the first and third Wednesday
of each month at noon at the Apple Peddler Restaurant, 308 Hwy. 101
South. If you are interested in attending, call 464-1889 or 487-2281.
On Wednesday, Oct. 5, Kiwanis Club of Crescent City, begins its 86th year of service to Del Norte County.
