As Lighthouse Repertory Theater moves onto the next phase of a project to turn an old cinema building into a theater, it’s asking the community to raise its voices in song.
Show Tune Me the Money on Saturday will have attendees bidding for the opportunity to sing songs from “Grease,” “Sound of Music,” “My Fair Lady” and “Jersey Boys” in front of local judges. LRT members will also perform solos and duets from the
“We’ve had eight fundraisers, and they’re all around Broadway musicals because that’s what we do,” said LRT President Nina Burgess. “There’s wonderful talent in this community and they don’t always get on stage with us. We’d like for them to come out and have fun.”
Saturday’s fundraiser will go toward LRT’s work to transform the old Red’s Showcase Twin Cinemas at 369 G Street into its new theater. According to Burgess, over eight years LRT has raised funds to buy the theater, finished the roof, painted the building, repaired the awning and removed items left over from when the cinema operated. The next area of need is handicap-accessible restrooms as well as electric and heating for the building, she said.
The judges will be locals Ruth Rhodes, Erik Apperson and Christie Lynn Rust, Burgess said. The winner of the contest will get a season pass for LRT productions, a trophy and a certificate good for a singing telegram from an LRT member, she said.
The karaoke equipment has been provided by Sea West restaurant in Fort Dick, Burgess said. The event will also include an auction and a no-host bar sponsored by the Jaycees. Auction items include tickets to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland as well as the Britt Festival and Cape Blanco Country Music Festival. Donations for the auction also come from Ferndale Repertory Theater, the Requa Inn as well as framed art from local artists.
Show Tune Me the Money will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Hall at 810 H Street. Pre-sale tickets are available for $35 at Del Norte Office Supply and Wright’s Framing in Brookings. Tickets at the door are $40.
