The Del Norte County 4-H column runs monthly. This installment was written by Christine Jones and Valerie Machado.

Our annual 4-H Soup Supper and Country Auction has come and gone. Del Norte County 4-H would like to thank everyone who made this event a big success.

There are too many individuals, organizations and businesses to thank everyone by name. The supper was well attended and both auctions did well. We couldn’t have our wonderful program without the support of our community!

• We had several members attend the second annual Humboldt County Rabbit and Cavy Breeders’ Bunny Extravaganza at the Moose Lodge in Eureka. This event was attended by 4-H members from both Humboldt and Del Norte counties.

Local members Taylor Jones, Ana Machado, Kaitlyn Machado, Donald Magray and K’Marie Magray attended and participated in various rabbit and cavy contests including showmanship, breed identification, skillathon and breed conformation. Among the results:

Best Cavy (Guinea Pig) in Show, K’Marie Magray

Reserve Cavy in Show, K’Marie Magray

Crazy Fur, K’Marie Magray

Cavy Breed Identification Primary Champion, Donald Magray

Cavy Breed Identification Senior Champion, K’Marie Magray

Rabbit Breed Identification Primary Champion, Kaitlyn Machado

• Local 4-H clubs are out in force this time of year, performing community service in Del Norte County. A tradition started many years ago by leader Mary Hawkins is being continued by the Giddy Up ’N’ Goat and Wild River 4-H Community Clubs.

The members collect recycling and pick a day in December to turn it all in. The money raised by recycling is then used by the youth to fill wishes of children through Santa’s Workshop.

The 4-H members enjoy being able to choose boys and girls in their age group and use their expertise in choosing that perfect gift for the holidays.

If you are interested in donating recycling for this community service project, call Valerie Machado at 951-0268. And stay tuned for more community service projects carried out by our very own Del Norte County 4-H!
