Several students that placed first in a district spelling bee during March will compete in the state competition.

Fifth-grader Kayla Cain, sixth-grader Joreen Adams and eighth-grader Cerina Aragones placed first at the 21st Annual Del Norte County Unified School District Spelling Bee on March 19.

Aragones, a Crescent Elk Middle School student, will advance to the California State Junior High Spelling Championship on May 12.

She also will compete at a Marin County junior high spelling bee.

Twenty-four school district judges and volunteers assisted at the district spelling bee.

"I saw kids thinking hard and working hard," said Jan Moorehouse, Del Norte County Unified School District Super-intendent. Moorehouse judged the seventh-grade competition.

"The young man that won the seventh grade round, he was pulling my leg, he misspelled the practice words, but correctly spelled the other words. It was an indication that with good talent comes good humor."

Bill Hartwick, Crescent Elk Middle School principal said, each of the schools were offered incentives as spellers, volunteers and those in attendance enjoyed pizza.
