Students perform well at math tournament

Del Norte County students brought back three of the top six first-place awards handed out at the 48th annual Redwood Empire Math Tournament held Saturday at Humboldt State University in Arcata.

Thirty-nine students from Del Norte County schools participated in the event, representing all competition grades.

First place awards came home with Sammy Chan, a seventh grader at Crescent Elk Middle School, Thomas Trevino, a ninth grader, and Deborah Loughry, an 11th-grade student from Del Norte High School.

Other top finishers included Christian Crowell, seventh grade from Crescent Elk, and Edith Garcia, seventh grade from Smith River, who tied for third place; Mark Standring, eighth grade from Crescent Elk, fifth place; Sean Ransom and Christian Alexandre from Del Norte High School, who tied for third place.

In addition, 10th grade student George Peterson from Del Norte High School placed fourth. Eleventh grader David Standring from Del Norte High School placed third, and senior Andrew Ramsey of Del Norte High School placed second.
