Sutter Coast Hospital: a trusted resource

Sutter Coast Hospital began in 1931 as a small, privately funded hospital. Now 75 years later, it is a trusted resource, providing the healthcare services important to the quality of life in this region. The hospital provides general medical care, intensive/cardiac care, obstetrics/maternity care, emergency care, surgery, mammography, lithotripsy, home health and family planning. These advantages are available to all residents and visitors of America's Wild Rivers Coast.

As the region grows, the demand for new services and life-saving technology also grows. A new 59-bed hospital was built in 1992 – at a time when many rural hospitals faced cutbacks and closures. An affiliate of Sutter Health, a leading not-for-profit health network, the hospital offers the resources of a multi-hospital health system with numerous specialty clinics. Even with system affiliation, the hospital remains community-based, and governed by a volunteer board of local citizens from Curry and Del Norte counties.

Sutter Coast Hospital is one of the largest private employers in the region, with more than 400 jobs. As a not-for-profit agency, the hospital provides both charity care and health education programs. Sutter Coast provides about $4 million a year in charity care and community benefits.

The 33-bed Medical/Surgical Unit at Sutter Coast Hospital serves patients of all ages over a wide range of conditions. The hospital has four operating suites, a 12-bed Same Day Surgery unit serving surgeons and patients. Surgical services include general surgery, gynecology, ear nose and throat, orthopedics, ophthalmology, urology and some dental surgery. A growing number of procedures are done on an outpatient basis.

The Intensive/Cardiac Care Unit contains 10 beds, with four extra telemetry beds. The hospital also has added Electronic Intensive Care Unit (eICU) service. In the Sutter Coast eICU, experienced nurses and physicians use the latest in technology to diagnose, monitor, and treat seriously ill patients. The eICU provides local physicians and ICU nurses an extra layer of support for monitoring a patient and determining treatment options. The eICU provides round-the-clock monitoring by intensive care specialists, using video interface and other telemedicine technology.

The Birthing Center welcomes over 300 babies a year with same-room maternity care for moms and babies in four labor, delivery and recovery suites. C-sections and epidural anesthesia are available 24 hours a day.

Treating about 2,000 patients per month, the emergency room provides the region's foremost trauma care. The department is a Level IV Oregon Trauma Center with Certified trauma nurses and physicians.

Sutter Coast Hospital offers modern diagnostics with advanced technology such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), lithotripsy, low-dose mammography (six days and several evenings a week), echocardiography, ultra-sound, spiral CT scanning and nuclear medicine.

The Sutter Coast Urgent Care Clinic offers prompt treatment for non-life-threatening medical problems. Located across the street from the hospital in Crescent City, the clinic is open every day except Christmas.

Sutter Coast Hospital continues to respond to the health needs of Curry County with local services. The Sutter Coast Health Center @ Brookings Harbor and Sutter Coast Home Care are good examples.

Dr. Donald Venes joined Drs. Alex and Juliane Leighton at the Sutter Coast Health Center @ Brookings-Harbor in May 2006. Like the Leightons, Dr. Venes is a board certified internist, specializing in adult diseases and preventive treatments. Dr. Venes obtained his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Oregon Health Sciences University. He has 16 years of medical experience, including outpatient, inpatient and emergency medicine. Patients can be seen at Sutter Coast Health Center @ Brookings-Harbor weekdays by appointment.

Sutter Coast Home Care brings a variety of services into the home. Licensed Home Health nurses work under the direction of a physician to assist with teaching, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, catheter care and other nursing procedures. Licensed Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Medical Social Workers and Certified Home Health Aides are also available.

The newest addition to Sutter Coast services is the Sutter Coast Community Clinic. The clinic is staffed by obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. John Tynes, and nurse-midwife Margo Pfunder, CNM. The clinic is actively recruiting additional staff.
