Thank you to US Bank for its donation of $500 to CASA of Del Norte to support the “My Backpack Project.”
Maryanne Fallman, right, CASA chair of the “My Backpack Project,” accepts a donation of $500 from US Bank Branch Manager Amanda Chadwick in November. Submitted
Typically when children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect they have nothing more than the basic clothes on their back and usually those clothes need to be removed for the safety of the child. This very traumatic experience is intensified by children not having their own personal items — comforting blanket, baby doll, favorite toy, pillow, clothes, etc.
The “My Backpack Project” is an effort to provide children with comfort items and necessities that are their very own to keep. Each backpack contains a variety of items (depending on the age of the child) such as hygiene kits, snacks, pillow cases, blankets, stuffed animals, diapers, sleepers, sweat pants, journals, activity and story books.
This project was created by Maryanne Fallman and is facilitated through CASA of Del Norte. Fallman oversees the inventory of the backpacks and the items that go into them. The backpacks are kept at the Department of Health and Human Services so when children are removed, social workers can easily grab a backpack for the child/children.
Other donors to the “My Backpack Project” include: Dr. Ward, First 5 of Del Norte, Lighthouse Quilt Guild, Delta Kappa Gamma, Law Office of Jim Fallman, Maureen Jahn and New Life Community Church Women’s Auxiliary.
This is an on-going project that will need continued funding. If you would like to contribute to the “My Backpack Project” contact CASA of Del Norte at 464-3320, or www.casadn.org.
