Thanks: Many helped with food drive |
Thank you to all who helped make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive a success! Bags and bags of non-perishables were picked up with the outgoing mail on May 12. The letter carriers worked hard: a total of 7,025 pounds were collected in Curry and Del Norte counties. Almost 4,000 pounds of that was collected in Del Norte and will be divided between the food banks at CAN and RHS.
It was a community effort. To promote the event, Bicoastal Media, KURY Radio, the Curry Coastal Pilot and the Del Norte Triplicate ran ads. AmeriCorps mentors Kamilia Schnacker, Dolly Noon, Alessandro Broido, Sarah McMahon and Dylan Clawson volunteered their time to put up posters at local businesses and put on coloring contests for the After School Programs at Pine Grove, Joe Hamilton and Mary Peacock schools. Del Norte Office Supply donated the coloring sheets and Spotlight Video donated gift cards for prizes. We all know that food costs are high, and that’s hard on everyone. It’s hard on the people who seek assistance from food banks. It’s hard on the food banks, and it doesn’t make it easy to donate food. Thank you to everyone who was able to donate — you are filling boxes with a beautiful variety of nutritious foods, a variety that can be hard to come by. — Laura J.
