A big thank you to all who supported our 9–10 All Star Softball Team! Wow! Where do I start?!
Thank you to the Del Norte Little League Board, Galindo family, Custom Dezign Graphics, Gladiator Sports, Del Norte Triplicate, local radio stations, Jon Alexander, Gabe Lopez and all who made it possible for some of Del Norte’s finest 9- and 10-year-old girls the opportunity to travel to and compete at the Division 2 tournament in Sacramento.
The amazing journey commenced on July 4 when the team traveled to McKinleyville and took home the District 26 title. The following day the team held a car wash at the local Dutch Bros. where the community support was phenomenal with car after car of local citizens pulling in to support the girls.
Friday, July 6, the team, which consisted of 11 players and three coaches, traveled to West Sacramento where the team and most parents remained for the next 10 days in heat up to 108 degrees. The girls followed strict orders from coaches to stay cool, hydrated and preserve energy. Another rule was to be out of the pools by 8 p.m. and in bed by 9 p.m. I don’t think the girls liked this rule too much, but they complied.
During off times, the coaches, Mark and John (Mad Dog) Horner and Jennifer Douglas weren’t out sightseeing or at the poolside (where I was). They were at the ball fields battling the heat, scouting the fierce competition that lie ahead for our girls.
This team was outstanding. They maintained unprecedented sportsmanship and camaraderie and demonstrated unselfish commitment and dedication and came in second place in this tough championship tournament.
Del Norte should be proud.
