Del Norte 4-H: Del Norte County 4-H Christmas happenings

Editor’s note: The Del Norte 4-H column appears every four weeks. Today’s column was written by Christine Jones and Valerie Machado.

4-H open house is coming up

Del Norte County 4-H will be holding an open house and enrollment day Jan. 21 in the Arts and Crafts Building at the fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be activities and displays. We will also be taking enrollments for members and leaders. Enrollment is open to youth kindergarten through 18. Come and see what 4-H is all about.

Holiday recycling a success

Earlier this month, Giddy Up ’N’ Goat and Wild River Community clubs collected recycling for their community service project. With the help of our Crescent City Dutch Bros., which donated nine bags of aluminum cans, about $230 was raised.

The clubs immediately proceeded to Walmart and the youth members were able to fill 10 mittens from the Santa’s Workshop tree! The gifts chosen ranged from socks and shoes to a digital camera. Our community can be proud of these young people and their decision to make another person’s holiday a little brighter by volunteering their time, materials and effort.

Del Norte 4-H community clubs offer community service opportunities year round. If you have ideas of how to help our community while enriching the lives of our young members, please call the 4-H office at 464-4711.

Annual Christmas party

Every year, the Del Norte 4-H Council provides funds for a 4-H Christmas party. All Del Norte 4-H members, families and volunteers are invited to attend. Many families brought canned goods to donate to the community.

This year, the planning committee was co-chaired by 4-H members Taylor Jones and K’Marie Magray. The young ladies spent time planning games, wrapping gifts, organizing refreshments and setting up the venue for the festivities.

Other 4-Hers and families filled out the committee and were instrumental in bringing treats, setting up for the party and cleaning afterward. Members of the 4-H cake decorating project came in the evening before the event and spent time decorating beautiful holiday cookies for the party. A big thank you to all those involved!

This year, though attendance was down due to traveling and prior engagements, the party was a big success. Holiday revelers enjoyed finger foods and cider while making ice candles and having their faces painted.

Afterward, a series of games were played by young and young-at-heart alike. There was a toilet paper snowman contest, shuffleboard, musical chairs, piñatas and more. The party ended with a gift exchange for the 4-Hers.

Del Norte 4-H Council and community would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
