A new look for covers of B sections

Some changes are coming in The Triplicate's B section, which is published every Wednesday and Saturday.

Starting Sept. 3, the community-oriented stories, photos and listings that have appeared under the heading "Neighbors" will get their own section front on Wednesdays.

And starting even sooner, this Saturday, the Northcoast Life cover will provide a rotation of features. One of the regular installments will preview upcoming local events in the field of arts and entertainment.

Having a designated space for local arts and entertainment previews allows us to give these events a little higher profile on a more consistent basis. Depending on what's on tap, a particular Saturday may focus on one upcoming event or several.

If you're organizing or in charge of promoting an upcoming arts and/or entertainment event (the curtains should soon be rising on another season of school plays, for instance), let us know about it as far in advance as possible by dropping a note to Features Editor Matt Durkee, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Another installment in the Saturday rotation, and my personal favorite, will be called Walk Your World. It'll include descriptions and photos of the best places to take strenuous hikes or gentle strolls amid the redwoods and sea stacks in this vast piece of paradise we call the North Coast.

I'll be producing many of these pieces myself, and I'll have only one requirement for inclusion: at some point along the path, I need to be inspired enough to think, "this is the best hike ever." That may sound like a tough standard, but the fact is I've already had that thought more than a dozen times as my wife Laura and I have explored the new world we were lucky enough to move to last December.

Additional topics to be identified soon will also cycle through on the Saturday B section cover, which will continue to include Arts Scene each week.

But for now, allow me a few more thoughts on the buffed-up Neighbors page that will lead off the B section each Wednesday. This material, which has been appearing on inside pages of every Northcoast Life section, constitutes the ultimate local coverage. Birth notices, wedding announcements and a column by the publisher are some of the regular features, but we're always looking for guest stars, especially now that Neighbors will be on the section's front page.

Did your organization hold its annual fundraising soiree? Write it up (even a paragraph will do) and send it to us with photos attached. Did a co-worker or a family member receive a special honor? Give us the goods and we'll tell everyone. Catch a big fish? Send us the details and a photo so you can prove years later that it wasn't just a tall tale.

We want to provide a higher profile to the Neighbors page, which represents your chance to share your news — or your organization's — with thousands of fellow Del Norters.

Bottom line: this page belongs to you. To take advantage, email your information (don't forget those photos) to News Assistant Laura Wiens at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or send it to her at The Triplicate, P.O. Box 277, Crescent City, CA 95531.

And yes, that's the same Laura Wiens who accompanies me on my hikes. She's graciously agreed to put down her paint brush and help out around here for a few hours each day as we get the expanded Neighbors section up and running.
