About to sail and dragging anchor

About to sail: Kudos to local law enforcement agencies for more than adequately staffing local Fourth of July festivities. With alcohol flowing and roads and camping spots cramped, local festivities usually see a spike in citations and those arrested for public intoxication, DUIs and fights. This year, those numbers were down – and certainly beefed up law enforcement on the part of Crescent City Police and the Del Norte Sheriff's Office helped make the difference. "We try to take the initiative to try to keep the problems from continuing to build," Sheriff Dean Wilson said. That's the right strategy.

Dragging anchor: While the number of arrests were down for the Fourth of July festivities, that anyone had to be jailed at all is disappointing. The parade, fireworks, fair and other activities are about celebrating our nation's birth and coming together as a community. While we're certainly not opposed to raising a glass to that, there's no need to go overboard and cause public disturbances or drive intoxicated. Alcohol abuse is nothing to shrug off or joke about – just ask the hundreds of thousands of people who grew up in households with an alcoholic or lost loved ones to drunken drivers. We hope the 22 arrested for drinking too much this holiday seek the help and counseling they need so alcohol abuse does not continue to be a problem for them or their families.
