Thanks to the Triplicate for encouraging public comment on the economic viability of the proposed St. George Reef Lighthouse Museum and Maritime Center in the harbor ("In Focus: Lighthouse Museum," May 9). The St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society members feel that in addition to determining "If we build it, will they come?" an equally important consideration is the consensus of the local businesses and groups int he immediate harbor area who will benefit from such a project.
In the society's opinion, the current leader in developing such a consensus is the Crescent City Art Gallery, who staged a fundraiser for the museum in April 2006 that raised more than $13,000. Not only were these funds enormously helpful in meeting start-up and other costs, but the event was the most successful fundraiser in the 20-year history of our group.
The enthusiasm shown by Scott Potter, the other organizers and the general membership of the gallery was contageous, inviting scores of items from the community for the auction as well as monetary donations. The Crescent Harbor Art Gallery is to be congratulated for its contributions to the cultural awareness of Del Norte County, showcasing both our unparalleled natural beauty and maritime heritage. Their creative works will be a welcome addition to the museum, enhancing the architecture of the building and complementing its exhibits. If their example is followed by others who realize that harbor development is a key to the future of Del Norte County, we can all say "When we build it, they will come."
