Letters: Board rightly adopts policy for students with disabilities

The Del Norte County Unified School District adopted a new board policy, during its June 21 meeting, supporting Least Restrictive Environment for Students with Disabilities (PB6159.5). While this policy reflects long-standing federal law, it also describes in detail how the district will uphold this law. The policy states that the district is committed to providing instruction in the Least Restrictive Environment for students with disabilities, to the greatest extent possible, in settings with their non-disabled peers.

Parents of children with disabilities and others can receive a copy of this document from Don Olson, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the district.

I am grateful to the School Board for supporting LRE and for putting into real language what this law means to our children with disabilities.
