While I applaud Mr. Madison for his positive article on the "CHARACTER COUNTS!" local schools article, I would like to clear up some misleading statements. ("Kids for Character," Sept. 22)
"CHARACTER COUNTS!" is a district-wide program that was adopted several years ago. Teacher representatives from each school as well as several administrators attended a two-day seminar and were then challenged to implement the program in their schools. Since that time, "CHARACTER COUNTS!" has been alive and well at Joe Hamilton.
Much like our sister schools, we also award slips for catching students with good character. We acknowledge one student from each class at our monthly awards assemblies, awarding them with a ribbon, pencil and certificate for our spotlighted pillar of character for that month. We have several Read-Aloud' books, videos, posters, and activities available to our staff for use in their classrooms. Our principal discusses each monthly spotlighted pillar at our daily morning school-wide assemblies.
Until the regrettable vandalism last year, our campus had many beautiful banners out and about to remind students that we are a school of character. A few survived, as well as all of the banners in our Multipurpose Room. I applaud Bess Maxwell and Mary Peacock for their exemplary programs, and stand proudly side by side at Joe Hamilton in our united efforts to foster and award Kids of Character at all of our schools.
