Letters: Gang activity should notbe taken lightly by school |
Regarding the "pretend gangs members" ("Board hears of gang activity," Aug. 22) it just irritates me that a school would consider this so lightly. I own many rental units in Crescent City and deal with a lot of what I will call "unique" people. I fully cooperate with the police on problem situations that I consider unacceptable or illegal. I also work with a lot of people, giving those who are considered "unemployable" jobs. I realize Crescent City has a mix of people and you work with what you got. But, working with them is the key, not accepting what they "are" but giving the opportunity to change. People will do better when taught better! You would not believe the number of people I have helped to get facing the right direction just because I showed them someone cared. I would hope that the school would see the seriousness, care and want to stop it. These high school students are not beyond changing, given the opportunity and adults who work with the situation and show they care rather than accepting it. I don't know why a school, especially with a so-close prison influence, would not have a "no tolerance" rule against any gang-related activity. Carolina Aitken Loleta |
