Letters: Larger Wal-Mart will be goodcompetition for businesses |
I attended the county supervisors meeting Tuesday, Aug. 12, concerning the proposed expansion of Wal-Mart. I listened as Mr. Cole attempted to explain why he and the other members of the Crescent Heritage Coalition, whomever they may be, do not like the Environmental Impact Report. His answers to questions by the supervisors led me to believe Mr. Cole does not really have a concern except he does not want this expansion to take place. Other people spoke against it and they "believe" this expansion would put some of the local small shops and grocery stores out of business. All these excuses were tried years ago when Wal-Mart and K-Mart came in and we still have many of these businesses here today. Competition is what makes businesses better and stronger; they will adapt and be creative because that is the way to succeed. What I kept hearing from the people against expansion is the "glass is half empty" syndrome. An expanded Wal-Mart will bring in more revenue and jobs that many in our community are looking for so they can afford to remain here. I would like to see Wal-Mart counter-sue this Heritage Coalition for the time and money it will have to put out to fight this type of frivolous action. Marlowe Thompson Crescent City |
