Letters: Triplicate's coverage of medical marijuana issue biased |
I congratulate the Del Norte Friday Night Youth Council on their recent letter highlighting the bias in The Daily Triplicate's coverage of the medical marijuana issue. After personally treating patients who have injured either themselves or others while under influence of marijuana, I organized a petition on behalf of the medical community to reduce the plant number down to state standards. The petition was presented to the Board of Supervisors, but neglected in The Triplicate's coverage of the meeting. At the recent board meeting, I presented additional evidence of harm which the 99-plant limit has brought to our county, and loopholes in the statute which still need to be closed. Supervisor Martha McClure and attorney Jon Alexander both gave heartfelt presentations regarding the ill effects of marijuana. Once again, this information was not mentioned in the newspaper's coverage of the meeting, which chose instead to interview a marijuana advocate. The Triplicate's recent guest editorial, written by a marijuana proponent, was another one-sided piece, which recommended even higher limits of the drug, completely ignoring the fact that marijuana is flooding our community and our schools, harming families and compounding the county's huge drug problem.
