Letters to the Editor from May 8

Twenty-one year employee

of DA's office says all is fine

Regarding "Grand Jury: Investigate DA's Office" (May 2): I was employed at the Del Norte District Attorney's Office from 1981 to 2002. During the 21 years that I worked there, I cannot recall a single incident of charges being dismissed involving co-workers.

I believe the dismissal request of the speeding ticket was a very isolated incident and that there is no reason to have the District Attorney's Office investigated. It appears that District Attorney Mike Riese was unaware of this dismissal request and that once he was apprised of the situation, that he took prompt action to remedy the situation via a personnel disciplinary action.

Resident thankful for help

of Gateway Education program

I am writing this letter to thank all the community-minded individuals that worked so hard and cared so much about the students and citizens of Crescent City. I am speaking about the volunteers connected with Gateway Education Community Computer Program. This program is available to help citizens get a personal computer that can help them with school work or employment.

I recently moved to Crescent City from Atlanta. I am originally from Southern California. I am in the process of renewing my California teaching credentials. To accomplish this goal, I needed a personal computer to take a health class that is only offered online.

I ran into numerous challenges. Receiving the computer, and Andrew Butcher helping setting it up in my home really helped me get started on my goal. John Donaldson helped program the computer I received.

A great program like this has many valuable, caring, behind-the-scenes contributors and volunteers. I wish to thank Stormy and Carli at Social Services, along with Chris and the Del Norte County School District for providing computers for the program. I also wish to thank Mike at Tech Town for providing parts for the personal computers. You guys are the greatest!
