Proposition 25 will be bad for rural counties, Sheriff Wilson says

Voters in rural counties need to understand just how bad Proposition 25 will be for our voice in Sacramento if it should pass on Nov. 2. If you listen to the pros of the proposed simple majority budget for California, they say it will result in on-time budgets, and it will hold politicians accountable by not paying them if they fail to pass a budget on time. It is supported by the Democrats (majority party) and the unions.

Let’s get to the facts. Sacramento is broken and the budget process has not been followed for the past 10 years. The current two-thirds is only 67 percent in order to pass a budget. If you cannot get 67 percent to agree on a budget then it is a good thing it does not pass, because it is obviously not good for the majority of those who live in California. The problem is not the two-thirds requirement, it is polarized political parties.

Thanks to Council for voting to resurface local tennis court

The Del Norte Tennis Association would like to thank the members of the Crescent City Council for voting to resurface the tennis court at Peterson Park.

Eric Taylor took advantage of an opportunity to get a quality surface at a bargain rate and the result is great!  We, as a group of dedicated tennis players, appreciate having a public court added to the Del Norte High School courts, as those courts are often full.

Hate to think what would happen if Berkowitz couldn’t fight for kids

During these times of financial distress you are fortunate to have a person who works for the interest of kids every day. That person is Bob Berkowitz.

As a member of the board of directors of the California School Boards Association, I work with Bob on an ongoing basis as he constantly works to improve school funding for Del Norte schools and California as a whole.

Government experience qualifies Clinton Schaad

First off I would like to commend and acknowledge anyone who runs for office. I believe that it takes a special kind of person to put themselves out there for the world to judge, and the dedication that I have seen by many of our candidates is astounding.

This letter is in support of Clinton Schaad for county auditor. I have recently read ads that I believe to be very misleading. I commend Mr. Leighton for his past experience, but his experience is not applicable to the position of county auditor/controller, whereas Clinton Schaad’s experience absolutely is. He has worked within government finance for many years dealing with our very own county finances pertaining to daily operations and long-term planning, and has been a strong advocate for collecting monies owed to our county by the state.
