POP: Come join us on Sunday at birthday party for swimming pool

Happy first birthday, Fred, with a few presents from POP!

Feb. 8 marked the first anniversary of the re-opening of the Fred Endert Municipal Pool after its major renovation.

POP, Promote Our Pool Foundation, worked hard on encouraging the renovations and since then has made a few improvements, including Fred’s first birthday gifts.

Please pray for cancer-stricken Karen Alexander and her family

I wanted to take a moment to thank our community for your prayers for Pastor Steve Alexander and his dear wife Karen and the family.
For those of you who may not know Pastor Alexander, he has been the preacher of Smith River Baptist Church since 1997. His son, Scott Alexander, is the church youth pastor and coach of the high school varsity basketball team.

Local leaders lacked foresight on sewer rate increase proposal

Regarding the Feb. 5 Triplicate editorial “Rate rollback ignores reality,” back when the sewer rate increase was proposed, some of us from the Citizens Against $42.5M Debt pleaded with city officials to come up with another way to pay for the new sewer.

Since it’s about expansion, the money should come from new users, developers. We warned about the hardship on lower income residents, which abound in Crescent City, and were pretty much ignored or excused as hysterical. When we cited concerns about the coming economic downturn, which we are in as predicted, our own city attorney, Bob Black, scoffed at the notion that we would be affected by it.

Goodbye, KPOD: New far right format has led me to turn the dial

Goodbye, KPOD. For over 20 years I’ve enjoyed getting my daily fix of country music at 97.9 FM, but I’m about to go cold turkey.

Insurance companies have too much power in health care system

One of my concerns is the growing cost of health care in the United States while our population is aging and will need more health care than ever.

Insurance companies have too much power in our current system. Congress, please pass health reform now!

CHP Officer Borges did right thing, but it will come back to haunt him

I would like to commend Officer Rick Borges for his actions which placed a high-ranking county offical in custody on suspicion of contributing to a very tiring and ongoing problem in Del Norte County, driving under the influence (“Auditor arrested by CHP,” Feb. 2).

We are caregivers, not caretakers, and proud of it

As a “caregiver,” I’d like to address the usage of that word versus “caretaker.”

Caregiving is what you do. Make sure those you care for are active, alert, coherent, clean, comfortable and interact with others. Sit with the consumer, watch television, sit in the ER, go to appointments and have a conversation with them.

CAN has many programs to help families’ lives be a little easier

Success is a powerful word. It means a degree or measure of succeeding.

Here at Community Assistance Network, success can be achieved in many ways. At CAN, I believe success means being able to help Del Norte and surrounding communities. CAN has many different services such as food bank, clothes bank, community garden, housing, etc. Every program is to help families’ lives be a little easier.

I am Coordinator for the CANRecycle program. I have been given the opportunity to be involved in helping the community. I make a lot of phone calls, and do some running around, but what makes it so worthwhile is that the community is helping too.

All the donations that are sent to Funding Factory go right back to CAN; and with the cash we receive, it is used to help the needy. It makes me feel so good when we receive donations because I know it will be helping someone.

That’s what I call success; being able to help others less fortunate.
