If we fail to protect environment, we’ll face greater catastrophes
President Obama is the first president since Jimmy Carter to attempt to come up with “green” solutions to our coal and oil dependency problem.
Ever since I witnessed the Santa Barbara oil spill I have urged our national leaders to find alternatives to oil.
Generally, economic/political concerns deterred politicians from moving in new energy directions. Oil got tax write-offs and determined the rules or regulations. Green energy got little help. Could that be due to oil’s powerful lobby?
Several points need to be made about test performance, grades
In response to the recent article and letters about changing student’s grades for test performance, there are several points that need to be brought to light.
The California Standards Test (CST) is an end of course exam that tests students on specific standards. The standards development process brought teachers together to develop consensus on skills and knowledge students should possess. Before adoption in 1998, these standards went through a public comment process which allowed for parents, community members and business individuals to provide important feedback prior to state adoption.
The California Department of Education holds each school accountable for these test scores. Del Norte Unified School District schools are deemed high- or low-performing solely on CST and exit exam test student performance.
Unchecked flow of illegals will reach saturation point
I wish to thank Mike Misewicz for his June 8 response (“Immigration dispute letter prompts range of emotions”) to my May 29 letter to the editor (“Where is The Triplicate on the immigration issue?”). I am not at all clear if it was intended as a criticism or instruction. It completely avoided engaging any of the points I made in my letter.
I never stated I thought illegal aliens were not fine, hard-working people. I went through elementary and high school with many students of Mexican ancestry. Additionally, half of my friends were of Mexican ancestry. My godfather was Hispanic as were the godparents of one of our children. The difference between the Hispanic people I’ve referred to and those in my letter were that the former were all Americans. They were citizens of the United States and proud of it. The latter are not.
Thanks to men’s golf assn., H.S. golf team for Rally for Cure help
On behalf of the Del Norte Women’s Golf Association, I’d like to thank the members of the Del Norte High School boys’ golf team and the members of the Del Norte Men’s Golf Association for conducting a golf clinic for participants of the Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament.
They did a great job of introducing the game of golf to women golfers from Del Norte and Curry counties! There are still spaces available for women golfers for this weekend’s Rally for the Cure. Please call 458-3214 to sign up.

Send in collected hair to help clean up spill
As we all know, there is an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Here is what we can do to help at no cost. We want all salons, groomers, wool and alpaca fleece farmers, and pet owners to know we are orchestrating a phenomenal mobilization to help the gulf.
A huge International Natural Fiber Recycling mobilization is currently taking place to help get hair boom to the Gulf Coast spill. There are 19 donated warehouses spread along Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida that are receiving hair from donors all over Mexico, United States, Canada and beyond! This is a very easy process; for those who are interested in donating hair for this important project, please call us at 707-464-5500, ext. 157, for instructions.
