Chairman grateful for all who helped with parade on the 4th

First of all I wish to thank the Fourth of July committee for its decision to delay the parade start time to accommodate the Christians of our community.

Secondly, I thank the churches for changing their schedules so their members could attend the parade. We are a nation specially blessed by God. Taking the time to recognize and show appreciation for those blessings is always good.

I want to thank all of the parade participants for taking the time to create some wonderful floats and entertaining entries. Parades are fun for those in the line-up and those watching. The time the entrants devote to the parade is greatly appreciated.

Agreement ensures Yurok students can learn their culture

I would like to send a special thanks to the families, ACLU, and law offices of Don Brown for all their hard work with the Margaret Keating School closure matter.

It has been a long time since we received any resolution. I would also like to state that this agreement should be considered a historic moment for the Yurok Tribe, for even though we did not get our school reopened here, for grades sixth-eighth, on the Yurok reservation we have ensured all Yurok students have a chance to be exposed to the Yurok culture.

Uncomfortable with patriotism that depends on suppression

I was very interested and pleased to read Mario de Solenni’s Coastal Voices piece, “Time to stop being Global Cop,” June 15.

I have not yet read the book which Mr. de Solenni referred to, “World War II, the Rest of the Story,”  but I do know that some serious historians have long accepted the fact that the Roosevelt administration knew about the planned Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in advance and deliberately allowed it to happen. In effect, Roosevelt deliberately sacrificed several thousand American lives at Pearl Harbor to create an incident which he needed to overcome public resistance and satisfy his ambition to lead America into World War II.

I also was not surprised by the June 18 letter from Albert Tennant, “Mario de Solenni's analysis based on flawed history book.” Mr. Tennant wrote: “I hope this warped garbage does not find its way into our school libraries” I suggest that such book-banning would soon lead to book-burning, as we should remember from the Nazi example of World War II.

Community loses fine people in Christie Babich, Steve Luis

As like many in our community, I make my living and transact much of my business in between the Flynn Center and Front Street on H Street.

Over the past few years, I came to know County Auditor Christie Babich, both professionally and as a friend. As auditor, she was the epitome of efficiency and integrity. All too often in this day and age, when we don’t take time enough for each other. Christie was the exception, unfailingly taking time to make time, always with a smile and kind word, both in and out of the office.

I didn’t know Steve Luis well, but I know many who did and I hear the same good things said of him that I knew of Christie.
