A major sporting goods retailer has its eye on Crescent City.
Big 5 Sporting Goods, which is based in El Segundo, has submitted plans to the Crescent City Planning Commission for architectural review. The retailer plans to build a 10,000-square-foot store on a vacant lot at 1055 North Highway 101 near Totem Villa apartments.
The Crescent City Planning Commission will discuss Big 5 Sporting Goods’ request at its meeting on Thursday.
“They’re anticipating being under construction in a couple of months and open by November,” City Manager Eugene Palazzo said Wednesday. “It’s not a done deal. It’s an application that’s been submitted.”
The store’s proposed location was once the site of the Totem Motel, which was demolished in the late 1980s. The store will include a parking lot with 40 spaces and two exits, a loading dock, sidewalks, signs, lighting and landscaping.
The building will consist of 7,251 square feet of retail space, a stock room, dressing room and office space.
According to Palazzo, the city has been negotiating with Big 5 Sporting Goods to open a store in town for several months. The Community Development Department has also worked with site locators and property owners, he said.
“It’ll create a variety and diversity in our economy,” Palazzo said. “It also creates jobs for construction and it’ll create permanent employment at the store.”
Community Development Director Eric Taylor said Big 5 submitted a good application. He hopes that the proposed location at Crescent City’s northern gateway will encourage other national retailers to open local stores.
“We’ve focused on developing the whole 101 corridor,” Taylor said. “When people come through town, that’s what they’ll see. Economic development-wise, it’s a really good thing for our community.”
