Pages of History: Diver tells of struggle with giant octopus

From the pages of the Del Norte Triplicate, January 1945.

A diver’s terrifying fight beneath the surface of the ocean with an enemy more treacherous than the Japanese — a battle with a giant octopus while he was 50 feet beneath the lagoon waters of a Pacific atoll repairing the cables of a communications cable — this is the story of Navy Diver Wally Hight of Crescent City, boatswain mate 2/c, of San Francisco, as told in a recent issue of the San Francisco Chronicle.

A member of the Navy Construction Battalion, Hight was lowered into the lagoon to locate the broken cable. Suddenly, he said, something shut off the light from above, like a cloud passing in front of the sun. Looking up, he saw the writhing tentacles of a great octopus.
