Pages of History: Festival dance, stick game in moving pictures

From the pages of the Crescent City American, April 1927.

Friday morning the Grantland Rice Sportlight photographers, Edward Quorts and Ernest O’Neill, directed by Sheriff Breen and accompanied by many interested townspeople, made a trip to Smith River and filmed the Indian Festival Dance.

The pictures were filmed about five miles beyond Smith River on the reservation and were participated in by 16 Indians attired in full ceremonial panoply. The dresses and ornaments worn by the men and women were collected from all over the county by Sheriff Breen and he deserves great credit for the long hours and sincere effort he has contributed to make the motion pictures of Del Norte County a success.
