From the pages of the Del Norte Triplicate, July 1958.
The opening of the wagon stage road from Crescent City to Jacksonville 100 years ago will be observed on Aug. 23 by the Del Norte Historical Society. On that date the mail will again be carried over the route with the cooperation of the Post Office Department and the postmasters of O’Brien and Crescent City.
The observance, which is being planned by the Del Norte Historical Society, will be a part of the national observance of the extension of postal service to California. The Overland Mails Centennial is a part of this observance.
It is planned to have a Jeep take the mail from O’Brien and travel over the old route to a point on the Smith River where the vehicle will be met by a team and wagon. The mail sacks will be transferred to the horse-drawn vehicle which will make its way, following the old route, to the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. Ceremonies arranged by the historical society will take place there, and the mail will then go on to the post office here.
