Pages of History: Offshore oil exploration under way

From the pages of The Del Norte Triplicate, June 1964.

Oil is the object of a search being conducted off the Crescent City coastline as a major oil company moved into the area.

Mobil Oil Company started a series of geophysical operations on the outer continental shelf hoping to find underwater petroleum.

In a letter advising the Del Norte board of supervisors of the off-shore exploration for oil, the company stated it will make use of a gas exploder and will not use uncontained explosives.

The area to be explored roughly is located from Point St. George westward for about 100 miles. It begins about three miles from shore and reaches westward for a maximum of 26 miles.
