The improvements on Front Street, the contract having been recently let, reminds old-timers of its condition years ago. During the the winter of 1861-1862, the waterways carried a large amount of drift, the water cutting the river banks and uprooting trees and brush, many redwood trees 10 and 12 feet at the butts, and several hundred long, lodging on the beaches north of the Klamath.
The Crescent City beach was gradually worked up into firewood, posts, etc. There are yet many redwood stumps along the beach.
For a number of years a great portion of Front Street was impassable for vehicles. From G to J streets, eastward of Front and G streets, the driveway was only 12 feet wide with a bank six or eight feet, the ocean coming up to it. From G to D streets, westward, the ocean had encroached many feet inland.
Later a bulkhead was built from D to K streets which prevented heavy seas from entering business houses. The streets K to D and eventually on to N are to be filled with rock and dirt, which will make a fairly good road connection to the Redwood Highway.
For many years there was no wharf here and freight was landed, in barrels, on the beach at the foot of E street, and taken to warehouses where freight wagons and pack trains were loaded for interior points, as far inland as Jacksonville, Ore., and Yreka, Calif.
Since the Redwood and Roosevelt highways have been built, over which hundreds of tourists travel, Crescent City is becoming quite a resort, and the improving of Front Street will be greatly enjoyed by them.
Fire does little damage
The fire siren sounded last Saturday evening, calling the firemen to the business place of James Berri, in the Bay Hotel Annex building, where a fire had caught in the roof from a defective fuse.
The fire boys made a quick run and soon had the flames under control. The fire did very little damage to the building and but little mess was made from the water used.
The boys of the Fire Department are to be complemented on their quick response to the fire alarm and for their very efficient work.
Crescent City a defense point
A first line of defense which will co-ordinate naval activities on America’s “West Front” and which may prove to be the “point of no return” of the battle line of a future day is planned by the Naval Air Forces in conjunction with reserve squadrons, none of which are now in existence and others of which are yet to be organized.
A Naval Air Force patrol which will cover the entire coast from the Aleutian Islands to the Mexican border, for the purpose of apprehending vessels of any type, surface or submarine, or aircraft, approaching the continental shores, will become one of the principal elements in the American defense.
In seven strategic locations, landings were made and studies made of the soil and harbor facilities. These are San Diego, Long Beach, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, San Francisco, Eureka and Crescent City, which will be a key point in operations.
