Pages of History: Shark bonanza attracts boats to the harbor

From the pages of the Del Norte Triplicate, September  1940.

Boats from many Pacific Coast ports are arriving daily at Crescent City to fish shark. Fifteen boats were standing off the harbor last night ready to come in this morning, and many more are reported on their way here.

One of the local fishermen who has just returned from Coos Bay, Ore., is Bill Ohlheiser, who with his partner, Bill Yohst, will fish 14 tubs of gear, and has already put seven tubs to work.

Road is under construction

Construction of a new link of county road along the ocean shoreline at Pebble Beach to provide a loop drive to Point St. George is under way under the direction of Supervisor Warren A. Howe. The new link, which is about a mile and a half long, passes through the McNamara ranch, the right-of-way having been donated to the county.

Included in the construction work is a small bridge over the creek flowing into the ocean at Pebble Beach. The new road follows the shore line to connect with the Radio Road at Point St. George and opens up a section of country that is very popular with tourists.

Dragonflies swarm

The latter part of last week a rather remarkable flight of dragonflies was noted north of Brookings. The swarms came from the north and continued for three days, Thursday being the thickest.

Triplicate gets new home

The Del Norte Triplicate this week makes front page news as it comes a step nearer to giving this community a complete and modern printing plant when the paper moved to its new home in the old Endert theater building at Third and J streets recently purchased by the publisher from the Hobbs, Wall company.

The building covers an area of 60-by-90 feet, and a crew of carpenters has been at work for the past six weeks remodeling the interior of the structure to fit he needs of a rapidly expanding printing and publishing business.

The move is of more than passing interest to many of the older inhabitants of Del Norte County since the building for years was the amusement center of Crescent City.

Raised nice grapes

Harold Royr brought some very nice Concord grapes down from the Gilmore ranch up the Winchuck River during the past week.

There are some very good grapes raised on Gardner Ridge and other places up the Chetco River also. Among others are the grapes Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Relswig raise on their place on the ridge. They have some fine Thompson seedless, some bunches weighing as much as 3 pounds and of good flavor.

Wanders all night in fog

Fog and unfamiliar terrain caused Bob Adler to lose his way on a hunting trip last weekend in the Big Flat sector.

After an all-night hike he eventually came out of Jonas Creek and arrived at Patrick’s Tavern just in time to intercept a rescue party sent out in his behalf. No, he didn’t get his buck.

Freedom Plaisted has presented Adler with a large cow-bell to wear on his next solo hunting trip.
