The spring of 1975 saw Warrior sports take another big step forward as girls softball became an official Humboldt Del Norte League interscholastic sport under the leadership of coach Wanda Hansen.
This group of girls entered the season without any real softball experience. The team included one senior, Larelle Hendon. Playing an eight-game schedule against league opponents, the Warriors went 3-5.
Coach Hansen and her assistant Char Biddle were really looking forward to the Warriors’ second season with the great group of returnees.
The group that started the Warrior softball program includes lone senior Larelle Hendon, and underclass girls Charlene Blackburn, Lori Abreu, Pam Dean, Debbie Covey, Becky Crockett, Linda Crockett, Cheryl Good, Linda Good, Karla Worker, Lori Love, Peggy Gensaw, Rose Tryon, Kathy Gilliland, Tami Williams, Sandy Henry and manager Ann Tryon.
This group of young ladies started what has become a very successful program and one that draws lots of enthusiastic fans to home games.
The 2008 team was one of Del Norte High School’s three Northcoast Section Championships. The other two were the 2001 wrestling team, and the 2002 boys basketball team.
I know with spring upon us I am looking forward as a Warrior fan to watching this year’s group of young ladies on the softball diamond.
