Warrior Memories: The fabulous Baker boys

During my years of playing sports at Del Norte High School, teams always had at least one of the Baker boys as a real strong part of the program.

Jack was the oldest of the brothers, graduating in 1949. He was an outstanding football player during his senior year. I remember him giving me more than one hard knock during my first year on the Warrior gridiron squad. Jack was joined on the team by his two younger brothers, Harry and Norman “Shorty.”

For Harry, who graduated in 1951, this was the start of an excellent football career. He became one of the Warriors’ top running backs as well as an excellent defensive back. While football was Harry’s best sport he also made significant contributions to the basketball and track and field programs. He also had musical talents as we sat side by side in the band playing the baritone horns. He was a fun teammate both in the band as well as on the football field.
