During the years that I was out of Del Norte County while coaching in the Southern California desert, during the 1960s and 1970s, there were a lot of outstanding athletes who wore the blue and gold of the Warriors.
Some of these I have gotten to know since returning to Crescent City, but many I have just heard stories about.
Bill Young, a 1962 graduate, is one that I never got to know personally, but I have heard what an outstanding athlete he was. Bill was a three-sport competitor while a Warrior playing football basketball and track.
He was a good end in football, playing for coach Tex Gatlin, but it was on the basketball court he made a name for himself. Bill played for the Warrior lightweights as a freshman, then became a real mainstay for the varsity during his sophomore, junior and senior years.
During his senior year he helped the Warriors win a share of the league championship. They shared the title with Fortuna. Bill scored 40 points in one game and had a season total of 446 points.
