When former Triplicate sports editor Bill Choy talked me into writing a column, I had no idea how much fun I would have doing them.
I also had forgotten (almost) how long I have been a Warrior or Warrior fan until I attended a Del Norte High School girls basketball game this year and watched the great-granddaughter of one of my former teammates playing for the Warrior varsity team.
Regin Loftin is a starter for the girls varsity team as a freshman and is just starting a Warrior career that is going to be fun to watch.
Regin’s great-grandfather, Bill, was a 1950 Warrior graduate who moved to Del Norte his senior year and was an excellent basketball and baseball player.
Bill played first base for the 1950 Warrior baseball team that went undefeated and won its second straight league championship.
After graduation Bill took his baseball talents to the Crescent City Merchants team, where he became a good second baseman. After graduation, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Joan McNamara, and started a family of four boys.
I wish I had known all of them, but I did get to know Bill Jr., who became an outstanding Warrior basketball player.
