Warrior Memories: 1967 DNHS grad Steve Shellabarger

When I came back to Del Norte High School to start my new job, one of the first people I met was Steve Shellabarger.

I found out that Steve and I were going to be working together coaching in the football program. I also found that, like myself, Steve was also a Del Norte High School graduate. Steve was a graduate of the new high school while I graduated from the old school on the corner of 9th and H streets, and right away we found a lot of things to talk about.

Steve is a 1967 Warrior graduate and was a true multi-sport athlete. He started out as a freshman playing JV football, lightweight basketball and was a member of the varsity baseball team. Steve started his sophomore year out right playing on Del Norte High Schools first-ever JV championship football team, a group coached by Dale Thomas.

He went from the gridiron  to the basketball court, where he made thevarsity and played on a team that was league co-champions. Steve then went to the varsity baseball team — something he did all four years in high school.

While Steve played football, basketball and baseball all four years, it was on the football field where he was really outstanding. During hissenior year he was a coaches’ all star in football and was also selected the outstanding senior athlete.

After graduating from high school, Steve went on to Chico State University, where he continued his football career. After graduating from Chico, Steve returned to Del Norte as a teacher and coach for the Warriors. Steve coached as an assistant in the football program until heleft Del Norte to coach in the Redding area. He also coached basketballand for a period of time was the varsity head coach.

I was sorry to see Steve leave as I had a lot of respect for both Steve and his wife Terry, who was also a teacher at Del Norte and workedin the drill and cheer programs. They were both great Warrior

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at HumboldtState University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High
