Warrior Memories: FB season is almost here

My favorite time of the year for more years than I like to think is high school football season.

When the Warriors kick off the 2011 season Sept. 2 at Mike Whalen Field against Hidden Valley High School, I will be there rooting for the team I love. This game will be extra special since it is the Hall of Fame game where the 2011 class of former Warrior standouts will be inducted into the Del Norte High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

It also has extra meaning to me since it includes two of my former high school teammates. I had the thrill of playing football, basketball and baseball with Don Morgan (1950 graduate) and Rod Griffen (1953 graduate).

Don was one of my best friends and still is to this day. He pitched and I caught on an undefeated championship baseball team and we still laugh and remember the fun times we had. Another thing that makes this a special night for me is that two young men I had the privilege of coaching will also be inducted. Jason Seybold, an outstanding running back on the Warriors’ 1982 championship team who went on to an excellent football career at University of Nevada, and Jeremy Lacy, a 1991 graduate who was outstanding on both the football field and the wrestling mat and still volunteers his time as an assistant coach in both sports.

I also remember a crazy night spent with another 2011 Hall of Fame inductee, Danny Souza, and his wife Barbara. My wife and I were having dinner with Danny, Barbara and Drew and Judy Roberts when the 1964 tsunami put an end to our celebration. I also remember Susan Jeppson from my first teaching job at Smith River as the best athlete of her class, and she carried these talents I saw in her as a sixth-grader into high school and a Hall of Fame induction.

I have had the privilege of watching all of these inductees play, so when Dee Spann, Stacy Morgan, Dave Scott, Eric Costello, Karen Hintz, Heather Durham, Mary Timmer, Sandy Wet-

zel and Sasha Tomasini join the others I just wrote about, this old coach is going to be there leading the cheers. This will be a fun night.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
