My Warrior memories sometimes do not have to go back very far to thrill me.
Watching our girls softball team play Drake for the North Coast Section Class 2A Redwood Empire championship last month was exciting.
To see our girls come back from a 2-0 hole to win 3-2 was a real tribute to the girls and the Warrior staff led by head coach Jackie Heuberger.
Jackie was a 1998 Warrior graduate. While a Warrior, Jackie was a standout member of the girls softball team. After graduation she went to Santa Rosa Junior College where she was a member of their softball team. After her year at Santa Rosa she transferred to College of the Redwoods. Her year at C.R. was a good one as they won the conference championship and advanced to the state playoffs before losing.
Three years ago Jackie took over the Warrior softball program, a program that had a lot of success under Pablo and Debbie Lorenzi.
Jackie has proven to be the right choice for the job. In her second year she won the league championship, but lost to Drake in the NCS playoffs. This past season was special in that the Warrior team did not have any seniors. Very seldom do you find a team that has the kind of success that the Warriors had without senior leadership.
The intense competitive spirit that Jackie possess has really carried over to her girls. You could see that the team recognized the value of hard work and good team play and you could also see they were having fun.
Coaching at the high school level takes a great deal of time. Jackie is a young mother and a student at Humboldt State where she is on schedule to graduate next June. To be able to arrange her time so that she could be a wife, be a mom, be a student and be a very good coach is a real tribute to this young lady.
Jackie is studying to be a high school teacher and I, as a long-time loyal Warrior fan, hope that she will end up at Del Norte. She would be a great addition to our other Warriors, Lewis Nova and Blaine Lopez, that were Del Norte grads and now head our successful football and basketball programs.
Our many fans are already looking forward to next softball season. With the whole team coming back and Jackie at the helm it is going to be fun.
Your fans respect you, your peers respect you and your girls love and respect you. These are the things that make being a coach special, and you are.
