Warrior memories: Meagan Curtis: volleyball excellence

Meagan Curtis stepped into some very big shoes, and has filled them well.

The standard that Debbie Lorenzi set for Warrior volleyball is off the chart. Starting with the 1989 season the Warriors under Debbie's leadership won 16 straight league championships. When Debbie retired, the reins first passed to Meagan and Jennifer Anderson, and then solely to Meagan.

She has kept the string intact, and the Warriors have now won the Humboldt-Del Norte League for 20 straight seasons. This record is really amazing since everyone in the league has as their goal going into every season to defeat the Warriors.

Meagan is a 1995 graduate of Del Norte High School. While a Warrior she played volleyball, basketball, and softball. She played on the Warrior varsity volleyball team for three years and developed into a real team leader and was captain of the team and a White Star winner. During her sophomore year she played mainly defense, but in her junior and senior years she was a setter and an outside hitter.

After graduation from Del Norte, Meagan went to Chico State University, where she continued her volleyball career. After graduating from Chico and returning to Crescent City she first taught agriculture at the high school.

After that she became executive director of the chamber of commerce. She now works for Alexandre Dairy, where she has been employed for several years. During all this time up until she took over the head coaching position, she helped Debbie Lorenzi in the program in various ways. In talking to Debbie, she says some of the qualities that make Meagan a good coach are her open mind, her real understanding of the game, and her eagerness to learn and become a better coach.

During the upcoming season Meagan is going to just assist in the program for the year as she is expecting her second child during the season. During her absence, Pablo Lorenzi will be the head coach assisted by wife Debbie, so our program will be in great hands.

Warrior fans will look forward to Meagan’s return and we wish her the very best as she becomes a mother again. She is a great young lady.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors, had an illustrious  career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
