Warrior memories: The Murray sisters: Jessica and Kristin

During the amazing run where the Del Norte High  Warrior girls varsity volleyball team has won 21 straight Big 5 championships there have been many excellent female athletes  that have gone through the program. However, none has contributed more than the Murray sisters.

Jessica and Kristin both went on to excellent college careers. This week’s article will focus on Jessica, the older of the two sisters, and next week, I will have the pleasure of writing about Kristin. These were two special Warriors.

Jessica is a 2001 graduate of Del Norte High School. This multi-talented athlete not only excelled on the volleyball court, but also was a very good basketball player and track athlete.

After graduation Jessica went on to Humboldt State University where she had four outstanding seasons on the Lumberjack volleyball team. After graduating from Humboldt in 2005 she returned to Crescent City and coached the Warriors junior varsity volleyball team. The fact that Del Norte has had such great coaching at the JV level has really helped keep the Warrior winning tradition alive, and Jessica was good. Her girls understood how to play the game.

In 2007 the Humboldt State head women’s volleyball coach took a leave from that position in order to be the number one assistant for the United States Olympic volleyball team. At that time the HSU assistant coach took over as the interim head of the program.

They needed an assistant coach for him, and they didn’t have to look far. The Lumberjacks tapped Jessica for the job, so for the 2007-08 season she returned to Humboldt State. This really speaks well of the confidence and respect the Jacks athletic administration has for this quality young woman.

When I talked to Jessica she said she is now living in Portland, Ore., working at a physical therapist office and living her dream. This member of the Warrior family wishes her the best and hopes all of her dreams come true.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors, had an illustrious  career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
