Members of Del Norte Youth Wrestling had a good showing at the Gold Beach, Ore., Coastal Classic on Saturday. Four grapplers earned first place finishes, while two came in second in their respective divisions. Read more...Del Norte High senior Roger “Bronc” McCovey continued to take down the competition with another dominant showing at the elite Mission San Jose Tournament in Fremont.

McCovey, who is undefeated for the season with over 30 wins, cruised to a first place finish at the tournament, which featured some of the best teams in the state, including No. 1-ranked Clovis. The tournament began on Friday and concluded on Saturday.

In the championship match, McCovey cruised to a first round pin over Richard Segovia  of  Silver Creek, the No. 5 ranked heavyweight in the state.

Try-outs for DNLL to be held on Feb. 21-22

All players not already assigned to a major or junior team, ages 9 through 16, must attend at least one of the  scheduled tryouts or fees will be forfeited.
It is strictly voluntary for players from age 7 and 8.
The try-outs will be held at  Pykes Field #2, if conditions allow.  If raining, tryouts will be held at the rollercade located at the fairgrounds. Contact the DNLL Hotline at 465-1800 the morning of tryouts for a recorded message of location needs.

TIMES: (Note: These times apply to both days.)

Ages 7-9 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Ages 10-12 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Ages 13-15 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Age 9 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Ages 10-12 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Ages 7-8 (voluntary) 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Warriors lose in Big 5 battle to Huskies 53-50

Come back from 15-point deficit, but can’t  hold on for the needed win

FORTUNA —  The Del Norte High boys varsity basketball team could not pull out the win after coming back in the fourth quarter, losing to Fortuna 53-50 Friday night.

The loss dropped Del Norte to 7-10 overall and last, at 1-5, in the Big 5 Conference. Before the game both teams were tied for last in the Big 5.

The loss made it very likely  Del Norte would not qualify for the Dick Niclai postseason tournament, which they won last year, and extended the Warriors  losing streak to five games.

The last time these two teams met, a triple overtime battle ensued, with the Warriors winning the home contest by 12 points last month.

Local swim club to hold practices starting Mon.

The Crescent City Swim Club will be registering swimmers and having its first swim practice on Monday starting at 5 p.m.

The swim schedule for the month of February will be Monday through Friday from 5:15 p.m. to 7:00 pm.

The Crescent City Swim Club teaches stroke improvement through organized and motivating practice sessions, combined with optional competitive swim meets.

Sign-ups for Rec Dept. basketball has begun

Sign-ups for the Del Norte County Recreation Department Adult Basketball League has begun.

The season begins on March 9, with upper and lower divisions available. Games will be played on Monday and Tuesday nights.

The team fee is $500 with the registration deadline on Feb. 27.

A team can be register at the Recreation Department, located at 1005 H St. in Crescent City. For more information call 464-7237.

CR girls soccer team looking for new players

The new coaches for the girls soccer team at  College of the Redwoods are looking for soccer players for this fall.

If you or someone you know are planning on attending CR either in Crescent City or in Eureka and are interested in playing college level soccer, please contact Del Norte High School girls varsity coach Clar Byers for more information regarding this opportunity at  541-251-1493.

Huskies roll over Warriors 73-21

Del Norte turns the ball over 30 times in defeat

For four quarters the Fortuna Huskies were relentless against the Del Norte Warriors Thursday night, scoring at will and causing 30 turnovers for the game.

When all was said and done the Huskies handed the Warriors a  52 point loss in Big 5 Conference action.

During their first meeting in Fortuna on Jan. 21, the Warriors led in the first quarter before losing 63-46. While they lost, Warrior head coach Buzz McCulloch was pleased with the way his team played against one of the elite squads in the Big 5.

Thursday night was another story as Del Norte lost 73-21.

Crusaders hand Warriors fourth straight loss 63-47

Senior Lesley leads team with 16 points

EUREKA — It was a rough outing for the Warriors on the road Wednesday evening.

Facing St. Bernard’s  of the Little 4 Conference, Del Norte High struggled to stop the Crusaders, who are undefeated in the Little 4, as the Warriors fell 63-47 to drop their fourth straight contest to go to 7-9 for the year.

Senior Andrew Ayers of St. Bernard’s paced his team with 26 points in a dominating performance.
