tourney in Eureka today
Cody Hoffman and his father Rick grabbed a 6 a.m. flight from Arcata this morning, bound for Provo, Utah, and the Brigham Young University campus.
The BYU Cougar football team arranged on Wednesday to have Hoffman, the Del Norte High School gridiron standout, come to the school for an official recruiting visit.
Hoffman, a three-time conference first-team White Star selection, said he’s quite pleased to be making an official visit to such an elite football program.
“I’m pretty excited to just see the facilities and meet the coaches,” he said, adding it’s a nice feeling knowing all the hard work he has put in has helped him get to the point where a program like the Cougars are bringing him in for a visit.
“I was pretty happy,” Hoffman said. “I’d like to play for a big school like that.”
DN hopes to have conference success this year
CRESCENT CITY — After winning its first Big 5 Conference game in two seasons against Eureka last year, the Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team wants to go one step further this season — to not come in last place.

After a 10-16 finish overall and going 1-7 in the Big 5 in 2007-2008, the Warriors are more than ready to take it to another level this season.
“I’m sick and tired of being at the bottom,” said head coach Buzz McCulloch.
He believes the team can be in the middle of the pack in the Big 5. “We have the potential,” McCulloch said.
Senior Kaylie Rook, known as one of the Warriors’ best defenders, said the team is full of athletes that have had success in other sports like volleyball, which just won its 20th straight league title this past fall, or softball, which just won its first section title in May.
EUREKA — It was not a good night on the court for the Del Norte High Warriors girls basketball team.
The squad was crushed 50-22 by Eureka in the Warriors Big 5 Conference opener on Wednesday.
“It was downright terrible,” head coach Buzz McCulloch said, saying it was “probably the worst Big 5 game I’ve had” in his five years as coach.
Del Norte made only four two-point baskets the entire game and was 14-for-29 from the free throw line.

The Del Norte High wrestling team, the defending Humboldt-Del Norte Conference champion, opened league matches with wins.
At Fortuna, the Warriors downed St. Bernard’s, South Fork and Fortuna Tuesday night in dual meet action.
Assistant coach Clinton Schaad said the majority of the starters, such as Roger “Bronc” McCovey (285), Grant Ivision-Lane (119) and Jordan Lacey (103) did not wrestle. But many new grapplers did and made great first impressions.
This included freshmen Gabe Flores (145) who won two matches, Barrick Sala (215), who quickly pinned his opponent from St Bernard’s and Isac Terry (215), who looked sharp in an exhibition match for his first high school victory, Schaad said.
The Warriors next compete somewhat closer to home at a tournament in Eureka on Saturday.
