DNLL boys make it to semifinals of tourney

After losing their first game at the district tournament the Del Norte Little League 11–12-year-old baseball all-star team won three straight games and made it all the way to the semifinals.

On Wednesday, Del Norte fell one game short of making it to the championship match, falling to the Redwood Empire team out of Eureka 7-5 in Fortuna. The tournament began on Saturday.

Del Norte head coach John Horner gave his team kudos for bouncing back from a loss in the first game and making it all the way to the semifinals of the double elimination tournament. He commended his squad for their dedication and  the sportsmanship they displayed throughout the event.

“It was a valiant effort,” he said about his team’s performance on Wednesday.

Grizzlies win 3 of 5 in Spokane

The Del Norte Grizzlies American Legion baseball team won three of five games at a tournament in Spokane, Wash., Thursday through Saturday.

Competing in the 24-team Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wooden Bat Classic, the Grizzlies lost their Thursday opener 7-2 to the British Columbia Trail Jays.

Del Norte came back to win its second game Thursday 8-0 over Graham Kapowsin of Tacoma, Wash.

On Friday, the Grizzlies’ Logan Lesina pitched “an awesome game,” said his coach, Eric Enos. Lesina’s 3-hit complete game resulted in a 3-1 victory over Chugiak, Alaska, the defending Alaska state champion.

After a three-hour break, the Grizzlies suffered several defensive lapses and lost to the Spokane Bandits, 9-1. Only one of the Spokane runs was earned, Enos said.

On Saturday, Del Norte defeated the Idaho Falls Russets behind the strong hitting of Kyle Van Dyke and the complete-game pitching of Joey Yeoman.

The Grizzlies, 18-6 on the season, will play in the four-team American Legion District 1 tournament later this week.

Little League All-Stars win tourney

The Del Norte Little League Junior All-Stars won District 26 Junior All-Star Tournament at the Del Norte High School softball field Sunday.

The local team of 13- and 14-year-olds defeated Redwood Empire in the championship game of the two-day tournament, 11-0.

Camryn Ridgley pitched well in the final game, striking out nine batters.

Amber Babbitt led off with a single  in the 5th inning that started a 6-run rally. Samantha Bausch hit a double that brought in 2 runs. Chandler Davis went 4 for 4, scoring 3 runs in the decisive victory.

The girls now move on to Section play in Chico on July 18.

Grizzlies drop three of four against Eureka

The Del Norte Grizzlies had a tough weekend against a familiar opponent, splitting a home double-header Saturday and dropping both games Sunday at Eureka.

Saturday’s games both went extra innings, with Eureka winning the opener 5-3 in 9 innings, and Del Norte taking the second game 2-1 in 8 innings.

On Sunday, Eureka won 10-0 and 6-2.

The Grizzlies are now 15-4 for the season, and they won three of six against Eureka. Today the Del Norte American Legion team departs for Spokane, Wash., where it will compete in a 24-team wooden bat tournament starting Thursday.

“We’re looking forward to getting out of town and playing somebody other than Eureka,” Coach Eric Enos said Monday, adding the Grizzlies “didn’t play inspired baseball” over the weekend.

Manager Eric Enos commended Kevin Walsworth, Logan Lesina and Travis Stacey for their hitting and Kyle Van Dyke and Walsworth for their pitching. The team next plays a doubleheader Saturday against Eureka.

The Del Norte Grizzlies continued their impressive play, going 5-1 at the Bobby Goss Invitational Tournament and finishing second in the Eureka area event.

The Grizzlies are 13-1 for the season, equaling the win total the team obtained last season.

On Saturday, Del Norte downed division rivals Southern Humboldt and Eureka.

On Sunday, the Grizzlies downed the Eureka Falcons for the second straight day to make it to the tournament title match against Oroville Post 95. Del Norte defeated them 5-4 on Friday.

Later that Sunday, good hitting and defense gave Oroville the win and the title 5-1.



Burnette qualifies for Ironman in Kailua-Kona

Local triathlete Russ Burnette qualified for the  prestigious Ironman World Championships this October in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Burnette and six other local participants took part in the Coeur D’Alene Ironman in Idaho on Sunday.

Burnette, 62, finished with a time of 12:19.37 to qualify for the Ironman in Hawaii.

Squad plays two more games today at Eureka area tournament

The best start to a season for the Del Norte Grizzlies American Legion baseball team continued with another win on Friday.

Del Norte downed Oroville Post 95 5-4 at the Bobby Goss Invitational Tournament at Redwood Field in Cutten in the Eureka area.

The Grizzlies improved to 10-0 for the season.

“It was a very good day for us,” Grizzlies head coach Eric Enos said.
