DN softball team downs Tigers 3-0, baseball squad loses to Arcata 11-3

ARCATA —  It was a mixed bag for Del Norte High in the regular season finale for the softball and baseball teams Friday night.

The softball squad downed Arcata 3-0, wrapping up the regular season with the Big 4 Conference title, which they clinched on Tuesday.

The Warriors finished the regular season 21-4 overall and 11-1 in the Big 4 and now await to see who and where they will play in the Northcoast Section playoffs. Head coach Jackie Heuberger expects to play the opening game at home sometime next week.

Middle School Track and Field

Middle schools throughout Del Norte County competed at a local track and field meet on Wednesday at Del Norte High School,.

Smith River (SR),  Redwood (RW), and Crescent Elk   Middle School (CE) took part.  The county finals meet will be held May 20 at 4:00 PM at Del Norte High School.

Playing a top-tier league opponent, the Del Norte High baseball team came out fired up in their last regular season home game of the year.

The Warriors certainly did not disappoint the home crowd, extending their current winning streak to four games by downing Arcata 4-1 on Wednesday.

The victory continued to improve the odds that the Warriors (6-5 in the Big 4 Conference and 15-10 overall) will receive a Northcoast Section playoff berth this weekend.

The Tigers (8-4 in the Big 4 and 14-8 overall) defeated first place Eureka 6-2 on Tuesday.

The two teams meet again today at 5 p.m. in Arcata in the regular season finale for Del Norte. If Del Norte wins they will tie Arcata for second place in the conference.

Big 4 champ Del Norte tames Arcata Tigers 4-1

Tied 1-1 after four innings, the Del Norte High softball team knocked in three runs the rest of the way to earn the win against Arcata 4-1 on Tuesday.

The victory, in front of the home fans in the last regular season game of the year in Crescent City was on senior day, as the five graduating Warriors were honored before the contest.

Del Norte came into the game as the Big 4 Conference champions.

On Tuesday, the Warriors had clinched their third straight Big 4 title thanks to the Tigers.

The Warriors, who defeated Fortuna 10-0 on Tuesday, earned the Big 4 crown when the Tigers, who had not won a Big 4 game this season, surprised second place Eureka 4-2 to give Del Norte the title outright.

After a slow start, the Del Norte High Warriors exploded for six runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 10-0 six inning win over Fortuna on Tuesday in Big 4 Conference softball play.

Shortly after the game ended the Warriors received more good tidings. Arcata, which was winless in the Big 4, upset second place Eureka 4-2. That news meant that Del Norte had clinched their third straight conference crown.

“Awesome,” head coach Jackie Heuberger said to describe the Warriors earning another conference title. “It’s exciting. The girls deserve it.”

Del Norte improved to 9-1 in the Big 4 and 19-4  overall.

On Tuesday, the Warriors came out in the first inning and had bases loaded with one out but were unable to capitalize.

Warriors down Huskies 11-1 for 3rd straight victory

At home, the Warriors battered the Huskies 11-1 in five innings in Big 4 Conference action as the squad earned their third straight win.

Del Norte defeated Fortuna in doubleheader action on Saturday.

The wins have improved the Warriors’ chances of making the Northcoast Section playoffs for the second straight year. Del Norte is 5-5 in the Big 4 and 14-10 overall.

Del Norte received a complete game one-hit performance by junior pitcher Kyle Higgerson.
He had four strikeouts and three walks.

Warriors split against Loggers

A  disappointing 5-4 extra inning loss gave the Del Norte High softball team its first Big 4 Conference blemish of the year on Saturday against Eureka.

The Warriors proceeded to come back and earn the win in the second game of the home doubleheader 5-3.

Despite the loss, the Warriors are in solid position to earn their third straight conference title this week in the final week of the regular season.

The Loggers are currently in second place in the Big 4 with   three conference losses.

The Warriors are currently in first in the Big 4 at 8-1 and 18-4 overall.

Warriors crush Huskies 15-4, 8-1 on Saturday, May 9

After being defeated the day before by Eureka, the Del Norte High baseball team had a much improved performance on Saturday.

Facing Fortuna, the Warriors cruised to 15-4 and 8-1 victories to help enhance their playoff cause.

On Friday, things did not go well for Del Norte, which lost to Eureka, the top seeded team in the Big 4 Conference, 9-2 on the road.

Warrior head coach Pablo Lorenzi said his squad was rusty and played uninspired ball against the Loggers.

Due to games being cancelled because of rain, the team had not played since falling to Eureka at home on April 28.

Because of the muddy and wet  field conditions, the Warr­iors were able to practice only a few times outside.
