Warriors crush Huskies 15-4, 8-1 on Saturday, May 9

After being defeated the day before by Eureka, the Del Norte High baseball team had a much improved performance on Saturday.

Facing Fortuna, the Warriors cruised to 15-4 and 8-1 victories to help enhance their playoff cause.

On Friday, things did not go well for Del Norte, which lost to Eureka, the top seeded team in the Big 4 Conference, 9-2 on the road.

Warrior head coach Pablo Lorenzi said his squad was rusty and played uninspired ball against the Loggers.

Due to games being cancelled because of rain, the team had not played since falling to Eureka at home on April 28.

Because of the muddy and wet  field conditions, the Warr­iors were able to practice only a few times outside.


McCovey officially signs with N. Idaho

ate heavyweight wrestling champion Roger “Bronc” McCovey is signing with North Idaho College.

His father, Roger Boulby, said on Monday the documents will be sent to the school by Fed Ex today.

North Idaho is a two-year school located in Coeur d’Alene near Spokane, Wash.

The North Idaho wrestling team took second place this past season at the National Junior College Athletic Association national wrestling tournament and have won 13 national wrestling titles.

McCovey, a senior at Del Norte High School, just finished his second straight undefeated regular season, which ended with him winning his second straight state title in Bakersfield in March.


Lorenzi’s team wins Game 1 in title series

The  Llaneras of Toa Baja in Puerto Rico, a  professional volleyball team former Del Norte High standout Petra Lorenzi plays for, won its first game in a best of seven series for the league championship on Saturday, May 16.

Toa Baja downed Corozal in a marathon five set match 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 16-25 and 15-9 to go up 1-0.

Lorenzi, who completed her senior season at the University of South Carolina last fall joined her current team in December.


Warriors sweep Huskies

FORTUNA  —  The Del Norte High softball team continued to roll in conference play, downing Fortuna 1-0 and 10-0 on Thursday.

Del Norte improved to 7-0 in the Big 4 and 17-3 overall.

It has been a bit of a layoff for Del Norte, which has not played since defeating Arcata at home on April 24.


McCovey visiting 1 more school, likely going to N. Idaho

There is still one more school two-time state heavyweight wrestling champion Roger “Bronc” McCovey is looking at before he makes his final decision.

On Thursday, McCovey left Crescent City to visit Highline Community College in the Seattle area, his father Roger Boulby  said. The school had two junior college All Americans on the team this past season, according to the institution’s Website.

On Tuesday McCovey and his father said that he planned to sign with North Idaho College.
