Roger “Bronc” McCovey is making sure he does everything in his power to be a national champion.

Nearly every day since he won his second straight state heavyweight wrestling title March 7 in Bakers­field, the Del Norte High senior has been training for the National High School Coaches Association Sen­ior Nat­ionals that run today through Sunday in Vir­gin­ia Beach, Va.

This includes wrest­ling with teammates and even coaches during intense practices designed to get him in top shape. He also has been lifting weights religiously and running.

The 18-year-old senior is considered one of the best high school grapplers in the nation and earlier this year was named the top heavyweight in the nation by Connect Wrestling, a national Web site.

McCovey left for Virginia on Wednesday. Seven of the top 13 ranked wrestlers in the country in the heavyweight division are expected to compete.

In its only home event of the year the Del Norte High boys golf team took third in Humboldt-Del Norte Confer­ence action on Thursday at the Del Norte Golf Course.

The Warriors came very close to taking second, finishing with a 412. Arcata finished second with a 410.

Curently, Del Norte is third in the HDNC.

While disapointed they could not take second, head coach Kirk Burrows said he has been pleased with the progress of his team this season and the development of the younger players.

Cole Lesley led Warrior golfers, finishing with a 79.

Luke Polidore and James Morrow both finished at 81. Christian Cane ended up with a 84 while Dillon Wright finished with a 87.

Kravitz to compete at Reno Worlds

Del Norte  high senior wrestler Joey Kravitz, a state qualifier this year, will face some of the top wres­tlers from across the United States beginning today at the Cliff Keen Reno Worlds in Reno. Nev.

Kravitz is excited to take part in such a huge event, with wrestlers coming from locations such as Hawaii.

Kravitz, who wrestled at 145 at state will grapple at 140 in Reno. The event begins today and ends on Sunday.

In its only home meet of the year, the Del Norte High Track and Field team gave  local fans a lot to cheer about on Wednesday by taking first in both the girls and boys divisions.

The boys finished with a total of 170 points. Next was Eureka with 76 points.

The Warrior girls had 127 points compared to 77 points for Brookings-Harbor.  McKinleyville also took part in the meet.

“Overall the day went really good,” Warrior head coach Scott Lindsay said. “The kids performed really well.”

DN softball team downs Gold Beach

For the second time this year the Del Norte High varsity softball team downed Gold Beach, Ore.

On Wednesday on the road, the Warriors defeated the Panthers 2-1.

Last month, in its season opener at home, Del Norte defeated Gold Beach 1-0.
