Warrior boys golf team places third in Arcata

The Del Norte High boys golf team placed third at an event at Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata on Tuesday.

James Morrow had the best score for Del Norte, finishing with an 86.

 Luke Polidore shot an 88 while Dillon Wright shot a 89.

Chris Davidson finished with an 93, as did Christian Cane. Cole Lesley finished with an 95.

DN boys tennis team falls to Panthers 6-3

The Del Norte High boys tennis team fell to McKinley­ville 6-3 at home on Tuesday.

Head coach Kirk Olesen said that while the majority of the matches were quite close, more times than not the Panthers were able to come away with the win.

Warrior Thomas Thao, the No. 4 singles player, won his match as did No. 6 player Zack Collard.

In No. 2 doubles play Thao and Daniel Escobedo were victorious.

Del Norte next plays on Thursday at home against Fortuna starting at 3:30 p.m.

Brookings-Harbor downs Central 52-49 on Saturday

CORVALLIS, Ore. — After what will probably be the most memorable game of their lives, the Brookings-Harbor High School boys varsity basketball players did a few things they’ve been looking forward to all year: hoist the OSAA 4A Oregon State Basketball Championship trophy and cut down the net in Gill Coliseum.

And they did so surrounded by friends, family members, and a student body that traveled five hours to be there — and has supported them all season long.

“We’d all like to thank everyone who showed up,” said Bruin Fred Corpening. “I don’t know how to describe it,” he said of the fans and friends on the court during the post-game celebration, “It’s wonderful.”

Warriors baseball squad opens season with a win

The Del Norte High baseball team opened its 2009 season with a 4-3 win over Healdsburg on the road on Saturday.

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Warrior mounted a comeback to earn the victory.

Head coach Pablo Lorenzi said that this is the first time in “a long while” that the team has opened the season with a win, and he was pleased overall with how his team performed.

Friends of Cal-Ore Fish hold fund-raising derby in the area

The Friends of Cal-Ore Fish hosted the Hank “Raider- Yeager” Derby this past weekend.

The event featured  former Oakland Raiders great Jim Otto and Vance Mueller along with Raiderettes Erica Kofoed and Angel McCoy.

Also in attendance was longtime derby participant, General Chuck Yeager and his wife, Victoria.

Youthful Warriors open season Saturday

Face Healdsburg in Arcata at 2 p.m.

There was a rush of activity at the baseball field at Del Norte HighSchool on Friday, as the Warrior baseball team received their uniformsand prepared for  their first game of the season.

After losing six seniors from last year’s squad that made it to theplayoffs for the first time in several years, head coach Pablo Lorenzisaid while the team  features a lot of new players in key positions,he’s hopeful the Warriors can make a return appearance to thepostseason in 2009.

The Del Norte High boys tennis team has opened its new season with a brand-new lineup.

All eight starters from last year graduated, which gave  longtime head coach Kirk Olesen only three players with high school tennis experience starting in the squad’s first match of the year.

Taking part in 5th annual Ore. versus Calif. Senior All-Star Dual

Local sports fans will have one more chance to see two-time Del Norte High state heavy weight champion Roger “Bronc” McCovey wrestle in California as a high school student if they don’t mind making the trek to Redding.

On Saturday, McCovey will take part in the 5th annual Oregon versus California Senior All-Star Dual meet at Shasta College beginning at 6 p.m.

The college is located at 11555 Old Oregon Trail in‚ÄąRedding.

The event will feature top wrestlers from both states in the 14 weight divisions facing off against one another.

Roger Boulby, McCovey’s father, said it was just decided  this week that Bronc would take part.
